Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences(abbreviated as ASIPP)was founded in September 1978 for the purpose of the peaceful utilization of fusion energy based on the tokamak approach. The main area of research covers high temperature plasma physics, magnetically confined fusion engineering and relevant important research projects.

ASIPP is one of the most important laboratories on magnetically confined fusion in China, has built HT-6B, HT-6M, HT-7, the first superconducting tokamak in China, and EAST, the world’s first non-circle cross-section full superconducting tokamak. On EAST, ASIPP has achieved many advanced and unique physical experiment results, and has won two National Science and Technology Progress Awards and other state honors.

ASIPP has established close and win-win cooperation relationship with more than thirty countries and regions, including EU, USA, RU, Japan and so on. As a major contributor in China for ITER, ASIPP has undertaken the procurement packages (PA) of superconducting conductors, correction coils, superconducting current leads, power supply and diagnostics, up to 73% of China’s ITER PA tasks. So far, all the ITER PA tasks have been implemented very well with high quality and on schedule, wining recognition from the world fusion community.

ASIPP attaches great importance to industrialization and application of fusion engineering and its spin-off technologies. It has established nearly 20 companies, creating both economic and social benefits. Hainan New Energy Research Center is one of the examples, which is set up to form a complete chain from basic researches to industrialization.

Among more than 700 staff, more than 80% are scientists or engineers. They're distributed in the 12 divisions, 2 technical centers, 3 administrative departments and high-tech companies. Four scientists have been elected as academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Every year there are researchers selected by talent development projects, such as the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, National Support Plan for High-level Talents and so on.

ASIPP offers doctoral degrees in plasma physics and fusion engineering disciplines, master degrees in 11 disciplines including electricity and new technology, cryogenics, nuclear technologies, and ASIPP also homes one postdoctoral working station. More than 1000 students have graduated from ASIPP. Presently there are some 400 students in the institute.

Plasma Science and Technology, published by ASIPP, is the only domestic professional academic journal in English in this field, and has been embodied by EI, SCI,SA. Its impact factor has been increasing constantly.
